In 5th grade we cover three units of study in the area of writing:
Students develop narrative (personal narrative, fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, narrative memoir, biography, narrative non-fiction), informational ( how-to books, directions, recipes, lab reports, fact sheets, news articles, feature articles, blogs, websites, research reports, ad non-fiction books), and opinion writing (including persuasive letters, petitions, and speeches) skills.
They participate in mini-lessons, conferring, and small group work, building on the previous lessons, culminating in a final published piece. Drafting, revision, publication and self-assessment are part of each session, as students become familiar with the unit goals. Much of their work is completed on personal laptop computers.
